About domain registration and web hosting?

I have heard more than once now that it is good practice for online buisnesses to keep their domain registration and web host companies separate? Can somebody explain to me why this would be if it's so?

Think of domain names and webhosting as an analogy to cellphone numbers and the wireless phone service providers.

The reason why you register your domain with one company and webhosting with another is so that the webhoster cannot take over your website. Supposed you get into an argument with your webhoster...it is easy to sign up for new webhosting service somewhere else and have the your domain registration company to point the domain to the new webhoster's servers.

Suppose you mistakenly used the same company for registering AND hosting a domain and you do get into a dispute with them over bad service...they might take forever and give you a hard time if you try to transfer out the domain to another webhoster for service elsewhere.

Your domain is the most important thing and you must keep control of it. if you have control of your domain name you can move from host to better host very easily.

I'm trying to start a website but I was wondering what I should use to host my websites. some websites I see stories how their website dissapeared because the company went bankrupt or their system got overloaded and other things. So does anyone know a good web hoster that is cheap. Also my friend is looking to move a site to a different web hoster. Any ideas how to move the same site without redesigning the whole site again. As for your friend, to transfer an existing website from one host to another is fairly easy. Backup the entire site onto your computer in a directory you have created.

Upload the site from your backup to the new host. Check all the links and images on your website to make sure they are working. Your site should be ready to go on the new host.

Reply:It depends on how many webistes u have, and wht kind of traffic.

If you have a site. which wud get atleast 10,000 visitors a day, i would say go with a bigger provider that can give u a dedicated server.

If you seem to have a smaller website, go for a reputable firm such as 1and1 or godaddy.com. Although, they wont be that cheap/ personised.

Also check out small firms, who give out good rates, and a good mix. I host my sites on a site called primexhost.com. Its hidden, i think its not even advertised, but ive been a customer since 4 years now, and not a single complaint.

About 100 buicks a year gets you a domain, free unlimited hosting, unlimited everythign, with everything inbuilt.

They can change it for you if you ask tech support... but there is a much better solution...

1) Get free hosting without the annoying advertisements.

2) Point the DNS servers of your GoDaddy domain name to the servers on your new free host.

Seriously. Free as in no money. And free as in no ads. I've been down the GoDaddy route and still use them for domain names, so I know exactly where you're at right now.

I want to build a web hosting computer, any newbie suggestions?

It's not my first time building a computer, so I have an idea of the basics. What I want to do is learn a thing or two from those of you that know what the heck they're doing.

I'm ultimately building it to use as an FTP site for work realted audio storage/transfer - mostly in .wav format. (Yes WAV, an nessesary evil, it retains the quaility for broadcast.)

Then once that's set up, down the road, to host a few web sites to offset any costs for upkeep. (my brother designs web sites. so I allready know that I'll get a couple of customers)

So clearly what you want is a "server' machine. The most stable servers traditionally are *nix boxes. For the past five years or so, Linux has grabbed the lionshare of hosting.

Typically internet connected boxes are colocated. The cost of colocation is typically space rental + bandwidth, with rack space rental being a large part of the total cost. Data center computers are rack mounted, so the typical answer to keep costs down is to use the smallest footprint possible, hence a 1U machine. HP/Compaq, Dell and IBM lead the market in the intel based (Linux) server space, although Sun has been trying hard to get a piece of it, and there are also clone vendors out there.

Because a 1U server is very limited in size, you can expect that it will be maxed at 2 cpus. Until recently, most of these machines were 32 bit, so that capped memory at 4g. Obviously, 64 bit chips are starting to gain a lot of traction, and this opens up the possibility of adding a lot more memory to these servers. While that's definately not needed for your FTP server, webservers that include server side scripts and cgi's and possibly also run databases can always benefit from memory. If I were buying a machine I'd get a 64 bit machine myself but this is a tough call when you don't have any experience setting up a linux server.

The other trend is the trend towards virtualization. Using software like VMWare or Xen, I'd strongly advise that you run at least 2 virtual servers -- this will let you have a sandbox for your main server (ftp server for your audio files) and seperate server(s) for your websites. This really pays off when you consider that you probably want a test and development server.

As you have to allocate memory to each virtual server, obviously the more you have the more you can allocate to each server.

The only fly in the oinment is the question of storage. Typically, you can get 2 drives in a 1u server, although you might be able to get 4 depending on the manufacturer. You want to plan your storage needs out pretty carefully. The larger the drives, the slower and more prone to problem they tend to be. With that said, if you plan to use this as network storage, your network bandwidth will be your bottleneck, and not your IO. If you already know however, that you will have 4 terabyte of these files, then you probably either need a 2u or 4u machine, or you need a disk subsystem.

That's about all I can throw out there, with the information you provided. Hopefully at very least it causes you to ask some additional questions.

One last thing I'd suggest to you in regards to .wav, is that there is the alternative of FLAC, that is a *lossless* compressed audio format that can reduce a .wave file by 30-50% with no loss of quality. You can either transcode back to the original .wav or use a flac player.

you will need an average computer, good CPU probably between 3-3.4ghz, as far as dual core for cpu's its up to you although all dual core is intended for is to multitask and multithread faster then a single core. since it will be mostly internet based youl obviously need a fast internet connection try adsl 2+, RAM 1gb to 2gb will be plenty and you will need alot of Hard drive space as your working with wav, look at 250-300gb or more as far as everything else e.g. graphics card, cd/dvd drive it wont make much of a difference what you purchase/build. for a soundcard any 5.1 sound card will work although if you purchase a new motherboard ( btw if you are going with intel without dual core go gor a motherboard with chipset 945/ if it is dual core 965or 975depending on your budget) the motherboards will come with onboard 7.1 HD sound which will be plentyful for your situation. hope that helps

Hi. I have a domain name, but much to my surprise this is not a website, so I think I now heed somebody who will host my webname to give me a site - is this right???? If so, is there any way I can put my domain name on a different web host to the one that provides the name - cos I think it's a bit of a bugger to have to pay once for the name and then again for a website. Is this right - or have I completely misunderstood how it all works!

For a new domain name just go to any big register, enom.com is a good one and so is godaddy.com. One important rule is to always keep your domain separate from the company you get your hosting from. Too many hosting companies use domains as hostage to keep you from moving when they start to suck.

For hosting in the UK it depends on what you need. For cheap shared hosting try uk2.net or hostnine.com, for a vps solarvps.com.

GoDaddy, on the other hand... good for registering your domain name, but I've not been to satisfied with their web hosting for quite a few reasons...

1) Slower SQL access because the database servers reside on a different machine than the web server -- also bad because now there are TWO servers involved, and if either of them breaks down, your website is offline.

2) Any communication with outside websites has to go through GoDaddy's proxy servers. Slow and less reliable for the same reasons as #1. Who would you want to communicate with? How about transaction processing sites like PayPal and Authorize.net?

HostGator suffers from neither of the above problems.

I note that you mention a "FTP uploader"... you really don't NEED this in Dreamweaver... simply configure FTP access under the Site Manager.

2) add up the sizes of all files you need and see how much that amounts to. You will obviously need more space. How much ore, think about how much more stuff do you intend on adding till the next payment (this is generally done yearly).

Basically, what you want to look for here is important "technical" features, and not be sold on a lot of glitzy gimmicks.

Number One is that there must be an easy, reliable, and SECURE method of backing up your data and transferring your files...

1) Does the host allow you to configure a direct connection between your IP address and that of the server (essential for using software like SQLYog to backup your database). If not, then at the very least, there should be PHPMyAdmin for a browser-based way to import and export data, though that's a less-than-ideal way to do backups.

2) Does the host come with popular, powerful, STABLE open-source software that you can choose to auto-install via a script instead of having to plow through a bunch of software manuals and upload all those files? Examples... PHPList (for the mailing list), PHPBB2 (for online customer support, discussion forums, etc), Zen-Cart (a shopping cart), and a content management system for your regular web pages (Joomla, Drupal, WordPress, etc)

3) Do you get a complete suite of email tools, including auto-responders, a default domain-wide address, spam-filtering (SpamAssassin), white-list filtering, etc)

5) Do they give you web statistics analysis tools like Webalizer and/or AWStats?

Odds are you'll be hard-pressed to find ONE host that will give you all of the above. But now you've got a ruler to measure what you're getting. What do I need to do to set a SMTP on a PHP based comment form ???

I've got the form ready along with all the necessary field validation and everything.

Since I want to receive e-mail after someone presses "Submit" button, I would have to make some changes in "php.ini" file but I wonder in order to do so, would it make more sense if instead of using "localhost", I use the SMTP provided by some web host company (such as godaddy.com), something I could only get AFTER I sign myself up with them.

the problem is that you want to send an email to another server right? your page is on a server and must have it's own email serving program (daemon) running. I wondered this too and ended up installing sendmail on my linux box.

btw, if you didnt get that far, mail() is the php function you want to use.

I bought a domain name and am almost ready to put up my own web site. I need someplace to host that will:

1. Be super, super cheap.

2. Allow me to use Google Adsense (I doubt I'll make any real money, but why not try?)

3. I need only about 10 megs of space forthe whole site.

4. No idea how much bandwidth I need. (What do you recommend.... I'd like to dream think my site will get busy, but I'm sure it'll be slow at first.)

5. Easy to upload my pages with ftp program on my mac.

6. Tech support (phone) is a major plus.

You will have to spend more money than what you intend to get the results that you want.

First if you are using a hsoting company you must get their approval to charge and host other peoples websites on thier server.

second 2 gb is only good for 1 large website or 4 small ones.

and third yes it is ricky, you first have to get the customers which cost money for adverstiment and then you have to be able to handle the work load. Web Design is a very easy business to get in to but many people fail because they do not have the education, skill or programs to keep up with large firms.

I know this has been asked before, but I've searched many web sites and reviews and I'm still confused. So, I've narrowed it down to Hostmonster, Bluehost, and Lunarpages. I'm a pretty technical guy, but I'm looking for a reliable web host for multiple domains that some will use databases. I'm not so concerned about a "simple" web site creator, as opposed to one that follows the HTML %26amp; CSS standards. I was going to go with 1%26amp;1 after seeing their huge ads in PC Magazine until I read the reviews. Thus, I'm not so concerned about cheap, just a service that is reliable, professional, and popular. In other words, what service would a developer recommend and use?

I may not be as picky (mean that in a good way!) as you are because I definitely don't consider myself a "professional" compared to friends who have web design businesses, but we've been really happy with Host Excellence. ( http://www.hostexcellence.com/templates/... )

There are a ton of paid web hosts out there, and my husband and I exhausted ourselves researching them before making a decision to go with HostExcellence for this site and another one we run. Ultimately, it came down to the fact that we were getting tired and we liked HostExcellence's plans for mulitple domains and the fact that they had a site builder with tons of customizable templates (many of them do, but some of the good ones on the review lists don't). My husband doesn't use the site builder for his -- he does his own code. I use the site builder until I'm more proficient on Nvu. We also liked the amount of storage and bandwidth we were given, among other things. I haven't had a complaint yet, and we've been customers since October 2005. They have excellent 24/7 live chat support that helps me all the time with just about any issue you can imagine. Whenever a service has been down (which has only been a few times), it's either back up before I have a chance to ask about it or it's resolved before I get off live chat with them. They have a ton of tools at your service, we have more e-mails available than we'll ever use, and more bandwidth and storage space than we've come close to dipping into. I need help finding a good web hoster. I'm not looking for a free host like google city you know what I mean. Something that has really I MEAN REALLY good space, good running servers, good awsome bandwith , and unlimited e-mails or a good few. And alot that people are looking for a website.

But most of these sites has a built-in site builder, so the user have to build the site while they are logged in the website. He's right, web hosting is dirt cheap. I think Go Daddy is $3 now a month. You can probably find that hiding in your sofa. Besides, most free web hosting services come with unwanted advertising material they place anywhere on your website, and won't support ASP, or PHP. Nothing free, but some things, like web hosting are still cheap.

Hosting does not cost "lots" of money. If you purchased a domain name you can certainly afford hosting. Microsoft office live is offering free hosting at the moment try there.

I am looking for a good free web host. I would liek it to have email, subdomains, and unobtrusive ads (for instance, foot banners, textlinks or no ads). I don't want to have to go through forum posting and applying, I would like a good, free web host. I have tried GeoCities (the site builder would not work), Gigahive (they stuffed me around), Bravenet (I've cnacelled my email subscription two times now and I still get email from them) and phpnet.us (used cpanel, which is just plain annoying), Google Pages (nice, but not enoguh formatting things) and Freewebs (insufficent space and too many hoops to jump through).

As you can tell, I am very picky.

I would like to avoid cpanel at all costs, because it is slow and painful. A basic web editor would be nice.

Any help people can give me would be great!

Why no web hosting service tells me how fast my site is likely to be on their servers?

I want to find a host which will load my site on my customers' computers the fastest. I realize there are many factors which can affect the speed but still I think web host companies should at least give me a list of sample e-commerce sites for each of their plans, so I can see how the different plans compare in speed.

Hosts don't even talk about speed, just disk space and bandwidth. Why? I thought loading speed of a site was the most important thing. If it will load slowly, who cares how much space or bandwidth I have?

I cannot determine which thing counts the most: server specs or connection speed? Every host lists server specs but very very few mention connection speed. How do I compare hosts then if I want to know who is fastest?

Is there any website or tool to test or at least get some idea of how fast a host is likely to be? Is it ping time of their home site?

Also, please list the URLs of some fastest hosts and please back your opinion with relevant metrics.

I think you answered your own question.

There are many factors that will affect how fast your site will load on someone's computer.

Here are some, in no particular order.

1. Where is the host server located?

2. What kind of connection to the internet does it have?

3. What ISP the customer has.

4. Where is the ISP's servers located

5. Which server would the customer connect to from the ISP?

6. Are the customer's ISPs servers loaded down at the time they want to connect to your site?

7. How many steps or servers does the connection have to go through to get to a particular customer?

8. Which browser does the customer use?

9. How much content needs to be downloaded to the customer's browser before they see anything useful?

10. The design of the website.

etc. etc.

I have a computer that is a few years old and I was planing on getting rid of it, but a friend suggested I turn it into a server to host some web pages. what to you have to do to turn a personal computer into a web host? I already have a 24/7 internet conection for it, so how do I make my web pages avalible for anyone to view on my own computer?

What OS is on it? If it's windows, short of windows server x, you'd either need to upgrade it to a server OS or use Apache. If (XP pro can host a site but will limit it to only a handful of active sessions at once) Apache on the other hand is free, and if all you're doing is hosting some basic webpages, it'd be the way to go.

Once you have a site built, which you can test on the server by going to http://localhost/, you can serve it to the net just by your ip address, or register a domain and forward it'd @ record to your IP. You should also get a static ip through your isp, there's ways around not having one, but most isp's only charge a buck or 2 a month for one.

Now if you have a router and/or a firewall, you'll need to open port 80, and forward traffic to your server box. The GUI for your router's configuration will allow you to do this.

Find out if your domain name allows for remote administration or if it's transferrable. Basically, this means whatever host you choose would be able to use that address to connect directly to your server. If you can't transfer the domain name or allow a host to maintain it for you, the people you bought the name from may be trying to force you to pay for their hosting in order to use the name at all. (Not trying to scare you... it's wise to be careful about such things.)

Forums and Chatting: what is your skill level with web applications?

-- HTML/CSS? What's that? You'd be better off using a free forum/chat room and linking to it from your site.

-- Can write HTML/CSS: You might be able to install a forum, such as phpBB, or something similar. Take a look at the site and see if it's your cup of tea: www.phpbb.com. They do have an excellent support forum to help you along if you need it.

-- I know PHP/MySQL, ASP, or other scripting: the answer is less related to what kind of forum software (you already know what you want and how to look for it) and more with the hosting provider, which will determine what you can and cannot do.

Chatting: this is a bandwidth-heavy application for a webserver, even for a small chat room with regular use, and most web hosts charge for breaking a bandwidth limit or outright shut you down when a threshold is reached. The pain in the neck? Outgoing and incoming use counts, so denial of service or bad requests to the webserver tick against your total for the month. Once again, for a cheap solution, I'd lean towards PHP in some form: lots of hosts support it and php.net is a very active site that can give you help in using it or giving your resources in finding an answer to your problems. If you are entry-level for such stuff, I'd recommend a Java-based client that you link to from your system... especially if it's light use. A banner ad is a small price to pay for a chatroom if it's sparingly used compared to your forum, which accomplishes a longer conversation time with far less resources. (Chat is still useful: real-time can't be beat.)

Google Ad-Sense is the service you're looking for on www.google.com for banner ads (or google.co.uk in your case.) Bear in mind, that this would pay upon a click, and the payout does not even happen until the money earned reaches $20 at least. This will probably not subsidize your website operation fund, but it could help.

The co.uk name would work regardless of where your host is: IP addresses are used in DNS to transfer people, not URLs. I could use a co.uk name to transfer someone to my .com site, for example, in America, and co.uk would still be on the address bar. DNS sees it as a request for the Wide Area Network address of 123.45.678.90, thus transfering to the 9.876.54.321 server in the US for example. Domain names do not matter.

Web space would be determinate on what you plan to do with the site and your expected traffic: 100-200 MB would be plentiful for an online meeting place for 10-20 friends. Around 500 for a small website of 45-50 people, 1 GB for 200 to 500, and 5 GB+ for 1,000 or more. (Remember: page hits are NOT recurring visitors!) Beyond that, I'd consider managed hosting instead of a service provider.

Bandwidth is how much traffic you'd be pushing each month: this limit is god with your website, since breaking it or surpassing it would result in either a bigger monthly bill or your site being shut down until the next month (both are bad for a budding website.) I'd consider enough for chatting and forum use to be around 500MB for less than 100 people. My site has 100 users and draws up less than 230MB for only a forum. Chatting (being it uses up consistant bandwidth, instead of intermittent bandwidth like a forum would use) would increase this considerably, but not by more than half.

For hosts, I don't live in the UK, so perhaps some one elses answer may help you with that one!

The other downside is that your domain is not as privatized as you may want it. You won't get a www.yourname.com site. You'll get a www.geocities.com/yourname site.

I am currently using Yahoo small business and i have two domain names with them. I haven't had any problems yet and the best thing is that nothing goes on my site unless I want it there except you know the hosted by Yahoo at the bottom. Its all according to flexibility you want.

There are no legitimate sites that give away free domain names. However, there are sites that offer free domain hosting, but most likely you'll have restrictions. (Ads, etc.)

If you're a starter, it's best just to settle on a freeserver like Geocities or Freewebs until you can purchase your own domain name. In my opinion, I don't think a person should own a domain unless they can make their own graphics, code their own html/whatever, and learn how to use a FTP program.

Sounds like your browser was hijacked by some kind of spyware or virus. Do a system scan with an updated virus scanner and spyware scanner and it should be able to clear that up.

Disk space = how much the server will hold for you(graphics, HTML files, etc..)

Bandwidth is how much can be transferred (usually per month).

A 1kb HTML page viewed by 1024 people will use up 1024kb(1mb) of your bandwidth, but that page will still only use up 1kb of your disk space.

disk space is how much you can permanently store on the server. (how many pics ect.) bandwidth is how much can be transfered when someone views your page.

example

a 100KB pic will always take only that much disk space. but every time someone visits that page and views the pic. it adds up, 1st time 100k 2nd time 200k and so on.

Bandwidth is the rate at which your pages are served on the internet when someone accesses it. (I am guessing about Bandwidth). This I think would be something to do with priorities for different people who pay different amounts of money.

Very basically this means if you bandwith is 4 %26amp; each person connecting to your site uses 1 then 4 people can click a button on your site at the same time. If a fifth person did it it would crash (I do mean symulatiously here as it would be ok if the delayed and waited1 second between each person clicking).

Disk space is how much stuff can be sotred on the website (or for use on it) it includes the text %26amp; pictures and any forums, links etc you have.

I am very new at this whole website thing. I was wanting to start my own website and I've heard of websites charging you a monthly fee and a cost per click fee. I've read all there is to read on yahoo domain and web hosting and it says nowhere in there about cost per click. But I was just wondering if anyone has tried it and what all the hidden cost were including the cost per click, if they have one?? Any answers will be helpful.

No, it isn't. I use yahoo domain and web hosting and all I pay is a monthly bill for using their services. The only thing that I know of where you pay per click is the ad's yahoo and google do.
